Schloss [Castle ] Neuwaldegg is an impressive example of Baroque architecture in Vienna. It is located in the 17th district of Vienna, Hernals, in the Neuwaldegg neighborhood, which is known for its historical significance and proximity to the Vienna Woods.
Schloss Neuwaldegg was built between 1692 and 1697, presumably based on plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach for Count Theodor von Strattmann. It stands out for its Baroque architectural style as well as its adjacent English landscape garden, which is considered one of the first of its kind in Austria.
Over the centuries, the castle changed ownership multiple times. In 1951, the Archdiocese of Vienna acquired the property. Between 1978 and 1986, it was extensively adapted for use as an educational center. Since 2002, the castle has been owned by the Private Foundation Educational Initiative for Central and Eastern Europe, which utilizes it for various events.
The adjacent Schwarzenberg Park, originally part of the castle complex, was acquired by the City of Vienna in 1958and today serves as a popular recreational area for the public.
Villa Neuwaldegg and its surroundings offer a remarkable insight into Vienna’s Baroque architecture and garden art, representing an important part of the city’s cultural heritage. The impressive redesign and renovation of the villa were masterfully carried out by PR Architects & Designers, seamlessly blending historic elegance with contemporary sophistication.
