Bookshelf

A modular bookshelf, consisting of three elements per unit, combines functionality with a striking design. Each element is made up of a dark steel box, which is spaced apart on all four sides by separators, creating distance between adjacent, lower, or upper elements. This arrangement lends the structure a sense of lightness and order. Indirect lighting behind the boxes not only highlights the books but also accentuates the architectural composition in an impressive way.

To add extra depth and dynamism to the design, the back panel of each element is draped with fabric. The texture of the fabric creates an intriguing contrast with the smooth steel surfaces, resulting in a visually dynamic effect. To prevent the composition from appearing too rigid and to introduce a functional highlight, white cubic membrane elements with built-in lighting have been incorporated—like an illuminated book emerging from the wall.

Despite the confined and narrow spatial conditions, renowned industrial designer Floris Jonker Roelants has succeeded in developing an architecturally and furniture-design-wise sophisticated solution. This design seamlessly integrates innovative material choices, functional elegance, and aesthetic harmony into a unique design element.
