Marie-Antoinette [AUSTRIA]
A Legendary Timepiece
The Breguet Marie-Antoinette is one of the most famous watches in the world and one of the most fascinating stories in watchmaking.
The Creation of the Watch
At the end of the 18th century, the legendary watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet was commissioned to create this masterpiece for Queen Marie-Antoinette of France.
The anonymous client (presumably an admirer of the Queen) requested that the watch be the most complex and luxurious of its time, incorporating all known complications.
Production began around 1783, but Marie-Antoinette was executed in 1793 before the watch was completed.
It was not until 1827, four years after Breguet’s death, that the watch was finally completed by his son.
Features of the Watch
The “Marie-Antoinette” (Reference No. 160) included all significant complications of its time, such as:
- Perpetual calendar
- Minute repeater
- Chronograph
- Thermometer
- Chiming mechanism
- Automatic winding
The case was made of gold, and the dial was crafted from sapphire crystal, allowing a view of the intricate mechanism inside.
